 The WEEE Directive (Waste Equipment & Electronic Equipment Regulations)
From 1st July 2007, the Government is implementing the WEEE Directive in the UK. This is legislation concerning the disposal of electronic equipment, luminaires and gas discharge lamps.
There are ten categories of WEEE:
1. Large household appliances
2. Small household appliances
3. IT and telecommunications equipment
4. Consumer equipment
5. Lighting equipment
6. Electrical and electronic tools
7. Toys, leisure and sports equipment
8. Medical devices
9. Monitoring and control equipment
10. Automatic dispensers
The category that concerns/effects your business with MGC Lamps is Lighting Equipment. To fulfil our obligations, MGC Lamps has joined the “RECOLIGHT Scheme”, a compliance scheme incorporated specifically to address the collection, treatment, recovery and sound disposal of gas discharge lamps and fixtures. Recolight will ensure that gas discharge lamps are disposed of effectively, in an Eco-friendly way and in line with the WEEE Directive requirements.
From 1st July 2007 all lamps containing hazardous gases will be disposed of at Designated Collection Facilities or Commercial Collection Points. Please refer to the RECOLIGHT site www.recolight.co.uk for more information.
Gas discharge lamps within the scope of the WEEE Directive include:
1. Fluorescent Tubes, straight or non-linear
2. Compact Fluorescent, CFL non-integrated and CFL integrated
3. Metal Halide lamps
4. High Intensity Discharge, including High Pressure and Low Pressure Sodium lamps
5. Xenon Lamps
6. Mercury Fluorescent lamps
Any items covered by the WEEE Directive will show this mark
The MGC Lamps EA Producer Registration number is WEE/GB0081UW
Recolight will charge the lamp producers a fixed fee for every lamp included within the WEEE directive. After 1st July 2007 a charge of 15p per lamp will be levied to cover the recycling costs. The Recolight fee will be subject to VAT. This fee can be passed on by our customers down the supply chain to the final end user. All WEEE applicable products despatched on or after 1st July 2007 will be subject to the WEEE charge; this includes all existing contracts and call-off orders, including those orders pre-dating 1st July 2007.
